Banks

Feature Summary

When players spend currency, a certain amount of their currency spent is deposited into a bank-like-feature. Banks are often themed as piggy banks, vaults, reserves, or bank buildings.

The most common bank system has a max amount that it can store, depending on different variables.

Typically, players unlock and collect the coins of a bank by making a purchase or by spending premium currency (as is the case in most Puzzle examples). The cost of unlocking the bank may scale based on the number of times a player has purchased the bank or the amount of coins in the bank.

Impact Analysis

Banks are typically used to drive first time purchases and transactions (and less so to drive revenue due to their low price per transaction).

Somewhat surprisingly, there are no bank features that were recently a Revenue Driver in any of the reports since 2018 (Revenue Drivers were added to the reports in 2018). There have been many references to them in Market Watches.

Looking at Slotomania’s IAP packages, however, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th largest transaction driver in this top grossing app are are bank-related packages.

Variations

In Casino, there are many different variations of banks but the most popular system is when players spin and a percentage of their spend goes into a bank. Once the bank is full, players must make a purchase to unlock the bank (e.g. Vault in Caesar Slots).

In Puzzle, the most popular system has players earn a primary currency when leveling up … and then use that currency to unlock the bank (e.g. Piggy Bank in Candy Crush Saga).

Here are some other variations ...

Price Points

There are many different price points across Casino but the first purchase is typically small, like $2.99 to $4.99. Once a player makes a first purchase, the price is often increased.

Piggy Bank Events

Both Casino and Puzzle Piggy Bank events are stacked with other participation and sale events.

Casino:

Only 2 events were noted Heart of Vegas’ Piggy Bank, and Bingo Pop’s Piggy Bank

Puzzle:

All Piggy Bank mechanics are marketed as ‘Events’, but run concurrently with no ‘off days’. The only exception was in Toon Blast, which held a Piggy Bank event that truly ended.

In general, Piggy Banks are seen running concurrently with no break in between events. This tactic could run the risk of desensitization, which in psychology is the diminished emotional responsiveness to stimulus after repeated exposure.

Collected Piggy Bank currencies do not reset after timer runs out and are available to players the next event. On the Playrix support page, the Gold Reserve for Gardenscapes/Homescapes says, “You can save up and buy coins multiple times while the offer is on. If you fail to buy or save up the amount of coins needed before the offer ends, don't worry, all the coins you've saved up will be available during the next offer”. The risk of this tactic, with events running concurrently, is that it can reduce the motivation for players to make the purchase within the timeframe
